Small businesses can’t afford an in-house IT employee and will seek help from an IT company and outsource common areas of IT.

Besides the huge advantage of being able to pick up the phone and call for IT support, IT companies monitor your network and computers and can identify issues with your computers before such issues become problems.

A good IT Services company can be a great resource for small businesses, proper services and solutions can impact businesses’ profitability and productivity.

Lack of IT Support for Day to Day Operations

Many small businesses work vigorously and do their best to help their clientele, but let face it, today computers are part of every business. Without computers, you can’t run your business nor offer a quality service to your clients.

Many business owners and managers resort to IT companies to help them with day-to-day support to make sure employees can stay productive.  Computer support can help employees with simple Microsoft Office issues, printing issues, to major network issues.

The biggest problem we see is that some businesses don’t have the right and proper IT support service to get help when issues arise. 

In fact, most of the businesses we work with, previously, worked with a break and fix company spending thousands of dollars and experienced long wait times. We recently worked with a small dentist office with constant computer issues and unable to effectively check out customers. When we asked what type of IT services or It solutions they had used in the past, well, let’s say Craig List came up!

Finding a good IT company with an in-house Helpdesk is essential. Also, trying to use your EMR provider overseas support to help you with daily computer challenges will not work well.

An IT company with a dedicated helpdesk team will get to know your staff and your systems. If you want fast and friendly support, make sure the IT company you choose has an in-house support team.

Most IT companies outsource their support staff, so be diligent and ask whatever IT company you are talking to.

Wrong or expensive Information Technology (IT) Solutions

Business expenses are closely watched by every business. Too much spending can hurt even the most profitable companies. However, many companies fall victim time to the “shining object” syndrome and hire the biggest IT company in town, thinking large is better. 

The problem is that large IT companies have lucrative partnerships with large technology companies and, in many cases, only work with those brands and technologies. We’ve also noticed a trend where large IT providers have the budget to deploy great advertising campaigns. Still, their product is behind and sometimes using old or proprietary programming code, making it hard to support the product. Most IT professionals can quickly see differences between products using proprietary code and products using common programming languages.

There is nothing wrong with using well-known technologies and big brands. But these brands are not always the best fit for small businesses. Technology brands specialing in small businesses and priced for small businesses.

Companies like Sophos and Fortinet build excellent cybersecurity solutions priced for small businesses. These vendors are as good and even better in some areas. Vendors like Sophos offer better options for small companies than bigger brands do.


Working with the wrong IT company

This is not a jab at any specific type or size IT company but is a topic worth talking about. Here is the issue, some IT companies do not have the staff, equipment, and knowledge to work with businesses and are more suited for home users. 

On the other hand, some IT companies are too large and use their company size to lure small businesses, and they overcharge for their services.

No Disaster Recovery Plan

Disaster recovery gaps are a recipe for, yes, disaster! Too often, business owners neglect to establish a reliable disaster recovery plan for their businesses. Backing up your files is essential and vital. A good back up can help you recover from accidental file deletions, equipment failure, and even cyber attacks like ransomware. A full disaster recovery plan will boost the benefits of a backup solution. 

A Disaster recovery solution must include business processes, replication of data, and cloud technology to ensure your business can continue operating if hit by a major disaster. For example, a hurricane, flood, or your building gets blown to pieces by a gas leak. 

Disasters happen as we all know, and if your data is sitting in a backup disk in the back of your office when a flood occurs, well, you can kiss your business goodbye.

Expensive repairs due to wrong advice

We all try to save where we can and cut costs when possible, but if you cut corners with your business network, you will pay for it later. Some times businesses will not spend the money to purchase a good antivirus and then succumb to a major cyber attack. Other times, cheap hardware becomes unreliable needing constant repairs.

What we find is that many times the business owner was given the wrong advice at the convenience of the IT vendor. I compare this situation to buying a car. You go to a dealer to try to find the right vehicle, and the salesperson keeps pushing the two-seater sports car. After you mentioned multiple times, you have five kids!

You see, the sales agent makes more money on that sports car than on minivans. The same applies to IT technology solutions, software, and other computer and hardware items. Many times tech companies sell businesses the wrong IT technology just so they can get better commissions and incentives.

Lack of or No of Cybersecurity Technology

I should say a lack of working with an experienced cybersecurity company. Businesses have to partner with an experienced IT firm in the cybersecurity space, or you can be left with basic or useless advice and Tech. 

Often business owners, understandably, try to save on everything possible. However, working with a “cheap” IT company can lead to costly consequences. Some tech companies do not have the personnel and equipment to provide you adequate cybersecurity advice.

Businesses face many challenges, and the hurdles mentioned in this article are mainly addressing technology challenges. The main point is that you should do your research and speak to multiple companies, share your business challenges and ask the IT company to explain how their services can help with such challenges.
